Meet the Team


Patterson McKinlay

As a Principal of Achieve Retirement, Patterson McKinlay is dedicated to helping plan sponsors understand their fiduciary responsibilities by promoting a streamlined and turnkey process that allows the business owner and H.R. Manager to focus on creating a more successful and profitable business while spending less time on the management of their retirement plan.


Through the implementation industry best practices and regular investment committee meetings, Patterson is able to partner with employers to provide support, expertise and understanding to every retirement plan he serves.


Passionate and driven, Patterson believes that every employee has the right to retire and he is dedicated in helping every employee to realize their retirement goals and dreams. 


With more than 10 years' experience helping companies with defined contribution plans, Patterson is one of only ten professionals in Colorado to successfully attain the AIFA designation as of 1/1/2016. Focused on fee disclosure, plan benchmarking and mutual fund analytics he is able to identify design strategies to promote optimal plan utilization and increased participation and employee retirement readiness rates.


Patterson holds his Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Series 7, 24 + 63 registrations with LPL Financial, and his Series 65 registration with Global Retirement Partners, and has attained the Colorado Life, Health and Property and Casualty licenses. Patterson graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a BS in Management and received an MBA in eCommerce.


Originally born and raised in England, Patterson now lives in Parker, Colorado with his wife and three kids. Patterson is an active soccer coach in his local community and enjoys the beautiful Colorado outdoors. 



Jim Smallwood

Jim Smallwood is a principal and advisor for Achieve Retirement. He is passionate about providing people with a variety of benefits, and partners with his clients to help them pursue their retirement goals. Jim is also president of employee benefits for Moody Insurance Agency, Inc. as well as president of Smallwood Select Financial Corporation. Moody Insurance Agency and Smallwood Select Financial Corporation are separate unaffiliated entities from LPL Financial and Global Retirement Partners.


With over 20 years of experience in insurance and financial services, he is known for his relationship-based approach with his clients and his dedication to maintain current knowledge of changes and regulations in all areas of his work.


Jim holds a B.B.A. in finance from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.  Additionally, Jim has earned designations of Registered Health Underwriter, Registered Employee Benefits Consultant, and Chartered Healthcare Consultant.


Jim stays involved in local and national financial and health care related activities with membership or past involvement in the following:

  • National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors
  • Colorado Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors
  • National Association of Health Underwriters
  • Rocky Mountain Employers Health Alliance
  • Colorado Advisory Council for Persons with Disabilities


Jim makes it a priority to balance his work time and his family time. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Jodi and their three boys while traveling, boating, snow skiing, water skiing, and attending and coaching youth sporting activities. Jim also enjoys hiking, biking, yoga and participating in a weekly basketball game.



Cyndie Hodges

Cyndie Hodges is an Advisor who specializes in partnering with plan sponsors to design a plan which is current with regulatory requirements while offering features important to employees- helping them be retirement ready and knowledgeable.


She believes a successful retirement plan is one with flexible plan design and a solid fund line up needing only minor adjustments over time.


Cyndie has 16 years experience helping clients with 401k, 403b, and 457 plans as well as Simple IRA accounts. Her clients have come to depend on her regulatory knowledge and audit support. She is committed to helping her clients educate their employees while helping them outline reasonable strategies for pursuing a comfortable retirement.


Prior to becoming an advisor, Cyndie worked as an emergency medical technician on a 24 hour ambulance for 10 years. Her passion is helping people whether that means saving their life or helping them seek a secure comfortable retirement.


Cyndie holds her Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Series 6, 63, 65 and 26 registrations with LPL Financial as well as her Chartered Retirement Plan Specialist (CRPS) designation from the College of Financial Planning. She also holds her Accident, Life and Health Insurance and Annuity licenses in the state of Colorado and Kansas.


Cyndie lives in Denver Colorado with her husband and five of their eight kids.  She enjoys spending time with her grandson, roller-blading and exploring the world of photography when she is not quilting or working with clients. She served on the planning committee for the Lupus Foundation for 2 years and volunteered at the 9 Health Fair for over 7 years. Cyndie and her family do annual fundraising for the American Heart Association and Children's Hospital in honor of her youngest son who had open heart surgery at age 6.
